Vegan Poutine Recipe (9.23.12 – Day 42) French Fries and Gravy

by TheSweetestVegan on September 24, 2012

Poutine is a Canadian dish that I have wanted to make vegan for some time now. It traditionally contains French fries, gravy and cheese. Since Poutine, and other National dishes, come with their variations, I decided to spare myself the vegan cheese and just leave it off all together. Gravy and French fries it is!

Vegan Gravy Recipe for Poutine

Ingredients for Mushroom Gravy for Poutine:

1/4 cup vegan margarine
8 oz Baby Portabella Mushrooms, chopped
1 small onion, minced
2 cups vegetable broth
1/2 cup corn starch
1 teaspoon liquid smoke
1/2 teaspoon raw sugar
1/2 teaspoon sage
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Directions:

Melt vegan margarine in a large skillet over high heat.

Add onions and mushrooms to the skillet and sautee until onions a translucent (about 2 minutes). Reduce heat to medium.

Sprinkle cornstarch evenly over vegetables.

Slowly stir in vegetable broth, almond milk, and liquid smoke to avoid lumps.

Reduce heat to a simmer, which is really low heat. Add in sugar, sage, salt, and pepper.

Allow the gravy to simmer and thicken for about 30 minutes. Stir slowly and almost constantly. Do not walk away from the stove!

Enjoy you Mushroom Gravy and Poutine!

Thanks so much, I’ve been looking for a vegan gravy recipe for years since I had an alternative vegan poutine. This is just what I was looking for.
